The Southern California Institute of Architecture also known as SCI-Arc, is home to one of the world’s top avant garde architecture schools.  Focusing on highly conceptual ideas and bringing them to reality through fabrication the school mixes experimentation with first-hand building experience.

The graduation pavilion for SCI-Arc is a celebratory space for the graduates of the school’s architecture program and was used between 2007 – 2009.  Being located in downtown Los Angeles, the design strategy was to maximize natural light while offering comfort in a cool shade.  Using a shimmering mesh material the space is wrapped in a complex folding pattern that floats above the audience.  As the folds of the form separate, windows of pure space open up to views of the blue sky.
